keep eye on Signs and Symptoms may arises due to Roundup usage?
Most dangerous Roundup exposure incidents happen through ingestion, but inhalation poisoning has occurred. Short-term symptoms include skin and throat irritation, stomach upset, difficulty breathing, changes to mental state and kidney failure. Long-term symptoms of exposure to Roundup may include elevated risks for certain cancers, including NHL and ML, and neurological disorders like Parkinson’s and autism.
Farmworkers are said to be the most at-risk class for developing NHL, a cancer that can start anywhere in the body from white blood cells in the immune system. (For context, the American Cancer Society expects 80,550 Americans to be diagnosed with NHL in 2023.)
Certainly, anyone using this product is potentially at risk. But landscapers, gardeners, groundskeepers, and farmers are most likely to have the most significant exposure to these pesticides.

Roundup History
- Roundup, the most popular and profitable weed killer ever sold, uses glyphosate as its most active ingredient. Glyphosate is toxic to most broadleaf plants and grasses. It kills most plants it comes into contact with, instead of targeting certain weeds or plants.
- Monsanto (which Bayeracquired in 2018), a now defunct company, developed the product. Because glyphosate kills anything it touches, Monsanto developed plant seeds that were genetically modified to resist the damage of Roundup. This is when residential Roundup sales skyrocketed.
- However, as the years went on, science questioned the safety of glyphosate. Studies have shown that the chemical might cause illness to humans and cause damage to the environment. The International Agency for Research on Cancer categorizes glyphosate as possibly carcinogenic to humans—essentially, the IARC is saying this toxin may cause cancer. In 2018, Roundup was purchased by Bayer. By then, consumers had filed thousands of lawsuits linking Roundup to cancer. The most common cancer associated with Roundup is non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Bayer committed to begin in 2023 replacing “its glyphosate-based products in the U.S. residential Lawn & Garden market with new formulations that rely on alternative active ingredients.

Does glyphosate cause cancer:
Glyphosate is the active ingredient in many herbicides, or weed killers. Since its invention in 1974, the chemical has been used in hundreds of commercial and industrial products.
A recent U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) study indicates the chemical may be hard to avoid. Among its findings: Glyphosate was found in more than 1,800 urine samples analyzed, about 80 percent of those studied. One-third of the samples in the survey were from children six to 18 years old. Other studies have found traces of the chemical have been found in breast milk and baby formula and in other foods, such as oatmeal and hummus.
The World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), however, stated in 2015 that glyphosate is “probably carcinogenic to humans.” CNN reported that hundreds of patients with non-Hodgkin lymphoma started suing the manufacturers of glyphosate herbicides after IARC made its announcement.
In 2019, researchers at University of Washington concluded that using glyphosate increases the risk of non-Hodgkin lymphoma by 41 percent.

Monsanto Verdicts and Settlements
- Over 125,000 claims have been filed by Roundup users who claim that it caused their non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Although many of these claims have been settled, tens of thousands remain
- Future claims. A certain number of future claims are inevitable because (i) it takes at least a decade between exposure to Roundup and the onset of cancer symptoms and (ii) since Roundup remains on the market, new exposures are occurring daily.
- Of the nearly 11,000 pending cases to go to trial, many have resulted in sweeping victories for plaintiffs. The first Roundup cancer lawsuit to go to trial – brought by Mr. Dewayne Johnson, a groundskeeper who was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma following repeated use of Roundup in his work – in 2018, resulted in a $289 million verdict on behalf of the single plaintiff.
- Roundup settlement for 2023?
Bayer offered $10.9 billion to settle roughly 100,000 existing Roundup claims, but a judge didn’t allow the company to settle all future claims for $2 billion. October 2023: A jury in San Diego jury awarded $332 million to a cancer patientafter finding Monsanto didn’t adequately warn of the cancer risks of Roundup.
Multidistrict Litigation (MDL)
The bayer $10 billion settlement is based on the concept of multidistrict litigation (MDL). in MDL, a central court combines certain aspects of a case (whether roundup causes cancer, for example), which then becomes binding on the parties. the parties then proceed to resolve the individual aspects of their cases, such as whether roundup caused a particular plaintiff’s illness, in individual lawsuits. The purpose of MDL is to enhance efficiency in large cases with similar facts.
An MDL is when the courts combine many cases with the same defendant or defendants to streamline the litigation.
